Relatively ancient and inactive

Ma' boithday's coming up; I'm thinking of getting new headphones. $150 is as high as I'd like to go; I'd like decent noise-cancelling and good sound quality/durability. I'd like them not to be particularly heavy and reasonably mobile - so I could fit them in my backpack.

I'm currently using this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826106295&cm_re=HD428-_-26-106-295-_-Product ; if you think it isn't worth upgrading because the difference won't be noticable, let me know. These don't cancel sound actively; they simply cover the ears. Is it worth getting headphones that actively cancel out outside sounds? Is it effective? Is it irritating?

Thanks in advance.

I believe Ex recommends these: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280-Pro-Headphones/dp/B000065BPB/ . Any reason not to go with 'em?

Woah

We use the Sony MDR-V6s where I work, and they're fantastic. They're also super comfortable, and fold up.

my little brother got an audio-technica headphone for a really good price (half?) somewhere like tigerdirect or newegg. i tried it and it's the best thing ever

it's sturdily built and addicting to listen to

oh it was on ebay for $80. It's model M50

now the price went up. :(

i was planning to get it myself

I wouldn't go for over-ear headphones purely for aesthetic reasons. For some reason seeing them on a person makes me rage really badly, and sound quality is not my biggest concern when going for a portable "solution".

Are you planning to wear them in public?

Not really. They're mostly for travel (on a bus or in a car) or in my apartment; I have smaller (like the ipod ones) headphones for wearing elsewhere.

If you don't mind looking awkward a bit, you should really consider getting the audio technica headphone. it'd be perfect for travel because it is air tight (almost makes my head hurt, but it's not as bad as some of the other ones), and i think it's noise cancelling too, maybe not.

Though I do agree with that sentiment, I personally have to get these kinds because I wear glasses and my ears kill me after a while if I wear regular ones. :-(

Oh_Man -- No APM in chess. Computer just outthinks the human by seeing more moves ahead and more permutations

NimoStar -- If its any consolation, the human brain would still mop the floor with this bot if it wasn't limited by the mechanical interface
[05:34 pm]
NimoStar -- Well. The bot didn't come up with any new strategy. It just has superhuman micro. Hard to beat that. I reckon even the simplest dedicated chess engines are unbeatable for humans now.

Oops, caught me there, no I haven't. :( I was imagining how the game went. Sorry for that. Watching it now. brb

NimoStar shouted: They were not "Unprepared" that was their fifth loss in a row against the bot. The other replays are also available
that doesn't mean he was prepared. When humans come around with new strategies it often takes weeks until the pros figure out how to shut it down. Oh_Man that's certainly a way more convincing argument for micro being "too good to beat".
